Just got my pair in and yes, they are a bit tight for someone with thick calves; but you wouldn''t want to run around in battle with hose falling down! I asked my dad (Argyll & Sutherlands) and he said to take the fold stitch out, which I did and now they''re perfect! Though I do not recommend this to people who aren''t able to carefully hand wash.
