I have a picture of my Dad wearing what would appear to be an identical pair of shorts (though possibly minus the FDK pocket) when he was doing national service in Singapore with the British army in the 1950's.

As to how to pick the right size, here's how I did it. I'm 6'1" and take a size 38 waist. Ordered the size 40 and it fits perfectly, including length (ending just above the knee. From the shorts in my Dad's photo, you need to remember that these are worn very high by modern standards. The top of the waist should be worn above your belly-button (as per Bobka's review.
