A little tight for a 40 but it will do. Very warm. Cuffed at about a 34" inseam but could be let out to about a 36. Good quality construction. I don't have an original to compare these to but if the colour and texture of the serge is reasonably accurate, then I should be happy. The serge of these trousers matches the serge of the tunic I also purchased.
