What is the historical period and purpose of this smock?

This is a reproduction of the Canoeist Smock, primarily used by Royal Marine Special Boat Squadron Foldboat crews. It was designed for use when operating small watercraft. The original smock was produced for specific military applications.

What material is the smock made from?

The smock is made from 100% cotton gabardine. This material is the same as that used in the 60 Pattern smock. It is a bit heavier than modern fabrics but breathes well.

Is the smock wind and water resistant?

The smock is wind resistant, and the elastic in the waist helps to retain body heat. It is not made from the original Ventile waterproof fabric and needs to be treated for waterproofing. Applying a TechWash Cotton Proof treatment makes it more practical for wet conditions.

Is the smock suitable for cold weather?

The smock functions as a perfect windproof outer layer. The elastic in the waist helps to keep the wind from robbing body heat. A scarf or neck gaiter can be worn inside the collar for additional warmth.

What kind of pockets does the smock have?

The smock includes a map pocket. This pocket is large enough to comfortably fit a mobile phone. The design of the pockets reflects the original garment's utility.
